TOBACCO USE

In the United States during the year 2005, 20.9% of adults aged 18 years and over were current smokers. This was a reported decline from 24.7% in 1997. (CDC 2005 National Health Interview Survey)

According to key findings of the 2005 West Virginia Adult Tobacco Survey (WVATS), 25.4% of adult West Virginians are smokers. 48.6% of all smokers in West Virginia made a quit attempt during the 12 months prior to the survey. Additionally, 16% of West Virginian males, and 2.6% of West Virginian females (age 18 or older) reported using smokeless tobacco.

The prevalence of smokeless tobacco use among WV adult males is about 16 percent, which is twice the national average. (“Smoking is Killing (and Costing) Us”, August 2005; Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), 2005).

In Kanawha County 17.5% of adults reported that they smoked everyday and 7.5% said they smoked some days. In 2005, 25% of Kanawha County adults said that they currently smoked. (2005 BRFSS)

According to Kanawha County Schools 2005 PRIDE survey data, 31.2% of Kanawha County 9th graders, 30.5% of 10th graders, 34.1% of 11th graders, and 38.4% of 12th graders reported that they had used cigarettes in the past year. According to the 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 25% of high school youth surveyed had smoked cigarettes during the past month and 15% had used smokeless tobacco during the past month.
